Walkbout is a soon to be released utility that will allow a mobile user to define "locations". Each location is a collection of settings, each setting comes from a widget. Typical locations are "home" and "work". At "home", we might use LocalTalk and an HP DeskWriter. At "work", we use EtherNet and a LaserWriter.
Instead of having to visit the Network CP and the Chooser each time we switch locations, now we can just ask WA to do it for us.
Widgets that will ship with Walkabout 1.0 include: Network (OT and classic saavy, includes TCP/IP), Default Printer, Extensions Manager, Sound Volume, FileSharing, AutoOpen (kinda like startup items, but not really), and TimeZone (deals with the Map and Date &Time).
Where do you come in? The widget mechanism is a public API, like Control Strip. If you are trying to write a widget or know of a product that needs to have a widget written for it, please send your contact info (including project name, contact name, phone, email, and street address) to Eric Slosser at slosser@apple.com.
